The Mayan Theater Los Angeles

Bad news for fans of the iconic Mayan Theatre. According to an announcement made by the venue this morning, The Mayan will be shutting its doors at the end of September, with several shows currently scheduled to take place before they close: Ekkstacy with Max Fry on Sunday, July 27; Novos Baianos on Wednesday, July 30; the House Issues Music & Arts Event w/ DJ Richard "Humpty" Vission b2b Bad Boy Bill, Barbara Tucker, DJ Irene, and Angie Vee on Friday, September 5; Cold Waves XIII LA Showcase with Nitzer Ebb, Front Line Assembly (Wax Trax! Era Set), Mentallo & The Fixer, Clock DVA, Lead Into Gold, and Die Sexual on Friday, September 12; and The Dare with George Clanton on Thursday, October 23.

There will be FREE weekend club nights taking place each weekend, as well as the venue winds down its last days as a place to see live music in Los Angeles.

The venue has played host to TV show tapings such as Fox 11's 'Culture Clash,' comedy specials, Lucha Libre events, and numerous iconic performances by Air, The Airborne Toxic Event, Marc Anthony, Devendra Banhart, Basement Jaxx, Bicep, Big Thief, The Black Angels, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Bloc Party, Blur, Bomba Estereo, Boys Noize, Bush, David Byrne, Cage The Elephant, Charli XCX, Chicano Batman, Cocteau Twins, Coldplay, CSS, Daft Punk, The Dead Weather, John Digweed, DJ Shadow, Doves, Duran Duran, Echo and the Bunnymen, Elbow, The Faint, Flight Facilities, Dillon Francis, Frightened Rabbit, Front 242, Ghost, Ghostland Observatory, Glassjaw, Grimes, Groove Armada, The Hives, The Horrors, Hot Chip, Imagine Dragons, INXS, Justice, The Kills, Linkin Park, Meute, MF Doom, M.I.A., Moderat, Mogwai, Muse, Gary Numan, Jai Paul, Perfume Genius, Pixies, PJ Harvey, Porno For Pyros, Portishead, Prayers, The Prodigy, Prophets of Rage, The Rapture, Ratatat, Rosalia, Robbie Williams, Hope Sandoval, Sasha, Simian Mobile Disco, Spiritualized, Stars, Stereophonics, The Sundays, Tiësto, TV on the Radio, The Verve, Jack White, Wolf Alice, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and many more under their huge in-house disco ball.

The venue with the unmistakable pre-Columbian facade with stone serpent heads first opened on August 15, 1927, in Downtown Los Angeles as a theater arts venue before the auditorium was then expanded to a more elaborate concert, TV show taping, stand-up special venue, and club venue in February 1990 and officially renamed The Mayan. The building is an L.A. Historical-Cultural Monument, so there's a chance it will be repurposed as an alternative entertainment venue, be used for retail, or some other purpose than what The Mayan is currently being used for.

I hope blackrock gets rich squatting on the property while it rots and remains unused and everyone congratulates each other for a job well done denying poor people from using the space.
