One off's and side projects are becoming more of a common occurrence in order to preserve fundamental practices of musicianship while the music landscape continues to push and pull like sonic tectonic plates. Portishead, instrumentalist Geoff Barrow alongside latest project "Beak" is the latest installation to this growing trend. As summer dwindled away over L.A. the photographers seemed to outnumber the patrons that were on hand to witness such a rare gig. While interviewing the band it became clear their candidness was a mechanism used to break away from the traditional constraints and pressures of being in a formal ensemble – their disposition was reminiscent that of an intimate garage band gig complete with interactive heckling at and from the crowd. Raw lo-fi tunes laced the air in an evening not to be forgotten anytime soon.
