Glen Hansard may be taking a break from the Swell Season but that doesn’t mean that you won’t be seeing him involved musically this year. You can now catch Glen Hansard when he returns to Los Angeles with The Frames! The Frames will be reuniting and will be playing in at Avalon Hollywood on Monday, November 30 in support of their re-released album, Another Love Song. Marketa Irglova will be working on solo material in the meantime during the Swell Season hiatus.

I knew as soon as I heard the first two notes of Headlong that it was going to be a brilliant concert. To be honest, just playing that song alone would have been a thrilling experience by itself. I was in the balcony, front row and center in full unobstructed view of everything on a comfy seat in good company. The place was packed. That’s where I was transported to music heaven, sang my heart out, and renewed my soul.
So, Headlong: I first caught it on Youtube in its animated form

and fell headlong for it and for anything related to The Frames. Their music works on your mind and your senses and as it adds layers upon layers of sound until you find yourself in a heavenly sonic cocoon and no idea how you got there. As you are floating in a state of bliss they gently let you land again and you enter the real world once more but still holding on to that feeling of bliss.
With many others I sang along with every song with every word (apart from the new songs) and added harmonies. It was a communal celebration of good times and exorcizing troubles.
What is it about the sound of The Frames’ music and their lyrics that renews the soul? Colm Mac Con Iomaire’s ethereal or soaring sounds on the violin explain some of the mysterious power. The unexpected chord changes explain more. The lyrics that explore the deepest questions play their part. Ultimately it is the sum of all parts including the ability not to take oneself too seriously (Glen Hansard’s comedic gift) that weave the perfect spell.
Favorite moment: They played Underglass. I squealed with delight!
I was sad the banjo wasn’t great in Rent Day Blues.
Setlist: Can I remember? No! I wasn’t going to write a list. I was living each and every moment with every fiber of my being. They started with Headlong. What else do I remember? This is not in order! Seven Day Mile, God Bless Mom, Rent Day Blues, Glen’s solo – Disappointed, Revelate, New songs – You Can’t Hide Your Love and
Your Heart’s Not In It Babe, What Happens when the Heart Just Stops, Santa Maria, Lay Me Down, Star Star, The Stars are Underground, Finally, Fighting on the Stairs, Underglass, People All Get Ready, Fitzcarraldo, Monument…I’m sure I left some out.
I can only advise strongly and sincerely that if this band is ever near you, GO! See them! Hear them! It will feed your senses and refresh you unlike any other band can.
I am still high on the experience and I never want to land.
