About a year ago, my friend Hunter had just come back from working at refugee camps in Uganda and Sudan. After a horrible 30 year long civilwar, the countries and their populations had been devastated. Young males were forcibly indoctrinated into brutal militias, a bloody and gruesome war raged and the countries were torn apart.

While working at the refugee camps, Hunter came across a group of women in Gulu who had came up with a novel and beautiful idea. Since the civil war had subsided, few men had returned home from the militias.

The men felt that the atrocities of war had made them unforgivable and they could never return home again to face their families and neighbors. Instead of returning, they stayed in the bush and the women were left without their husbands, sons, brothers and fathers.

The women of Gulu came up with a beautiful solution to a difficult problem. In the past diplomats, foreign aid workers, and politicians had failed in bringing the men back home.

The women decided they would tell the men they had been forgiven and to come back home in song. They would sing and record songs and send them out to the bush for the men to hear.

It was such an astoundingly simple and beautiful idea. Where words, politics, and social policy had failed, songs could reach their hearts and help heal the wounds caused by years of horrific tragedy.

So Hunter worked with the Gulu women, and brought the idea to other camps. He taught them songs of forgiveness and redemption. They sang the songs and recorded them and a miracle started to happen. The men started to hear their voices and to come home.

Six months later, after tons of advice from Oxfam, the UN and other groups with experience in the region the Voice Project was born.

We had an opening party at the Roosevelt Pool, coordinated with the release of the Edward Sharpe record. Devendra Banhart, Ana Calderon and I djed, and Edward Sharpe played their new record.

On their amazing record they had a song that perfectly captured the message of the Voice Project, "Home".

So Alex and I did an edit of the track, passed it along to Hunter, who then passed it along to Nicole from the Voice Project in Gulu.

One month later we received a video of the Gulu Widows Choir (the women who had come up with the idea behind the Voice Project) singing Edward Sharpe. It was beautiful and brought tears to our eyes.

After a day or two in the studio, we were able to mix their voices in with the original studio recording and create a magical and truly special track. Half recorded in LA, half recorded at the refugee camp in Uganda. We have captured the message of the Voice Project in a song.

We offer it up to you as a free download, to spread the word of this universal message of forgiveness and healing. Send it to your friends and everyone you know and help us spread the word of the Voice Project.

Music can heal wounds that words, policy and governments cannot. Go to the Voice Project Facebook page if you would like to join the cause.
