Yes, the news is true. Hard Summer 2009 was shut down tonight around 11:30pm. Due to security and safety issues, the City of Inglewood felt that the event needed to end before the crowd got more out of control. The decision was made about an hour before the official announcement allowing Inglewood riot police to get ready inside and out of the venue should there be any violent reaction by the angry attendees.
Only Busy P and Crystal Castles got a chance to perform while the confused crowd waited for Chromeo to come on. The safety concerns started when impatient attendees were breaking into the entrance to get into the venue due to long waits by the security check and inside the Forum from people not wanting to wait to get in line to get into the floor and jumping over the seats down into the floor hurting themselves or others in the process. The Fire Marshall got together with law enforcement backstage at the event and decided that the crowd would be to hard to control once the music started again. Trust us as we too at The Scenestar were saddened as to how it went down and were excited about covering Hard Summer 2009 as we interviewed Karl Hyde from Underworld leading up to what was to be the dance event of 2009. The Scenestar will update you concerning news regarding Hard Summer 2009 or if Underworld reschedules as we get it. Thanks to DJ Skeet Skeet who due to flight delays was unable to make it to his set time at Hard Summer 2009 for finding the video footage to post.
The venue was not right for the event and the event was poorly organized. I mean at a rave, everyone wants to be on the dance floor, not sitting in the mezzanine. There were no lines designated or enforced so people started crowding around the entrance to the floor and getting impatient. There was no organized system for orderly entry put in place so everyone was cutting and pushing. The event staff did not know what was going on so they could not direct attendees correctly. Overall, event staff were ignorant and very belligerent while attendees just wanted not to be cussed at and to have a good time.

Although I wasn’t there, this doesn’t surprise me at all. Hard Halloween last year was the most disorganized event I had ever been to. It really seemed as if there was zero planning for anything logistic, with long lines that wouldn’t move and security acting with no confidence in how to manage the crowds. I can imagine how the same mismanagement and ineptness went down last night and how horrible it must have been for people with $80 tickets. Hard’s only hope is to somehow prove they have capable event managemen if they want to be taken seriously again. But for my money I just don’t trust them. It’s too bad because a lineup like last night’s is a terrible thing to waste.

Let’s not go so easy on the organizers. The event was EXTREMELY DISORGANIZED. There were no signs, not enough staff present to answer questions, direct people and the venue staff certainly didn’t know anything about the event (even where things were located). It took me 1 hour 45 minutes to get through will call and inside. That is completely unreasonable for a wait time. Once inside, it was clear that they were grossly understaffed for security. You cannot hold them responsible for the stupid people who were jumping over the railing (the reason it got shut down) but a number of questions remain – why even after that did they not have enough security to move the people out of those areas immediately? Why would you sell that many general access tickets to a “dance” concert when most people are paying a lot of money to be able to be on the dancefloor, but you cannot accommodate even half of them?!?!? The organizers showed gross negligence and greed in understaffing the event, and complete incompetence in terms of their customers’ expectations. If they don’t offer refunds, we should organize a class action lawsuit … we have the grounds to show beyond the rowdiness that the organizers put the public at danger with their practices.

Interesting and unfortunate turn of events. I have a theory. I had tickets to see Neil Young at the forum last October and apparantly the Forum Employee Union were on strike. Since Neil doesn’t cross picket lines, he cancelled the show. The day of.
So… perhaps disgruntled staff who could care less how events turn out, assisted in last night’s debacle. Or, The Forum lost all it’s old employees, leaving the public with inexperienced rookies running shop.
I’m probably typing out of my ass.
One thing’s for sure: Inglewood is still up to no good.
