The moniker Drunk Mums automatically places a band with such a name in a precarious position. Are we meant to take Drunk Mums seriously or is everything one big joke from this group from Melbourne, Australia? Drunk Mums early recordings from 2011-2012 are dirty, fuzzy, and one bad night out on the town from unraveling. All one has to do is look at the album cover for their self-titled debut released in 2012 to understand the band’s mindset and intentions. The whole record is littered with infectious hooks played at breakneck speed with the type of attitude that would make any retired punk from a different era proud.
Time usually sands down the roughest of edges, or at least it’s supposed to. By the time the band released Gone Troppo in 2015, the members started showing signs of growing up. The playing became more proficient and the songwriting tighter, but the recklessness and visceral nature of their approach not only remains but is more direct and with a sharper bite. Drunk Mums' 2018 release Urban Cowboy, sounds like the band being put on time out by their parents and forced to listen to classic rock records from the ’70s. Other artists have tried this approach but none have managed to retain their punk demeanor like Drunk Mums. The answer to the aforementioned question is that we were meant to take this group of misfits seriously.
Long known for their crazy, high energy and downright rowdy shows in Australia, the band makes their U.S. and LA debut this Thursday, July 18th at The Hi Hat. Tickets are $12 each plus service fees via EventBrite.
